Imagine this: you’re on your way to work and are waiting for your bus when you receive a notification from the Goody Feed app. It’s about a new article that alleges that the company is finally closing down after so many years of operation.
You’re so happy that you click on the article and read it, smiling with an impish glee at the collapse of a company you absolutely abhor.
After reading the article and realising it’s #clickbait, you look up and see the back of the bus that you’re supposed to take.
It’s yet another day whereby you miss the bus because you’re glued to your phone.
Reader Bao: I don’t need to imagine that. I just experienced that this morning
Well, then you probably don’t take 187 in the morning at Bukit Batok.
SMRT Driver Remembers His Usual Passengers & Even Makes Small Talks with His Passengers
Yesterday, a Facebook user posted about his experience with a Bus Captain of SMRT Bus 187, a trunk bus that goes from Boon Lay all the way to Woodlands. The bus service serves both working adults and students as it goes to highly dense areas like Jurong West Ave 1 or Bukit Batok Central.
In fact, any Bus Captain driving the bus should be an angry fart, given that it even passes by the popular road that has a million traffic light: Jurong West Ave 1 to Jurong East Ave 1.
But not this Bus Captain.
According to the Facebook user, the Bus Captain, whose name is not known (yet), doesn’t just smile and greet all his passengers: he knows them by heart and even makes small talks to passengers.
The Facebook user also related an experience whereby the Bus Captain did not move off because he saw a “regular” passenger walking slowly towards the bus stop from afar.
And to make the journey even more pleasant, he even shouts “Road Turning” when he turns the bus…every single time.
This is done so that passengers could grab on something lest they lose their balance during the turn.
Here’s the Facebook post:
In case you can’t read, here’s what the user has written:
I don’t know his name, but this gentleman is the best Bus Captain I have ever met. He drives Bus 187 in the morning and reaches my stop in Bukit Batok at around 0700hrs.
He has a personal touch with his passengers and greets everyone who boards his bus. He knows that I am a teacher in Crest Secondary School (probably saw me talking to students). During the journey, he sometimes makes small talk with passengers.
This morning, an old man with a cane was walking slowly towards the bus and I asked the Bus Captain to wait. My request was not necessary. “That is my regular.” The Bus Captain said. He was not going to leave without his regular.
His driving is safe and steady. This is the only Bus Captain I have seen who calls out “Road Turning!” to the passengers when he swerves his vehicle. He does this for EVERY road turning, to make sure those standing do not lose their balance.
“Good luck, everyone. Study hard!” He said to the students who alighted from his bus this morning. In Chinese there is a saying 敬业乐业 (to respect one’s job and derive joy from it). This Bus Captain is really 敬业乐业!
So you’ve decided to give him the Bus Captain of the Year award after reading this?
Hold your horses. The Captain without a shield did more than that.

You won’t miss your bus if you take his bus.

I see him often as 187 services the route I take from home to work. If you are at the bus stop using your phone, and didn’t realise a bus is approaching, he will also do a slight horn to get your attention to make sure you don’t miss his bus.(if you are taking this bus ah). Can really see his passion for his job and I’ll always enjoy my ride with him to my destination. Great job Uncle!
I don’t know about you, but I’ll give him a Bus Captain of the Decade award instead—though, given his work dedication, he might just be the CEO after ten years.
Suffice to say, the comment section is filled with feedback from his passengers. Many of them remember his kind gestures, from his friendly chats to how he remembers his customers.
Heck, I don’t even remember my colleagues’ faces.
The post has since been shared for more than 5K times, and it’ll be a matter of time before someone CSI him out.

And I guess this time, he won’t complain about being doxxed. The Captain without a tight blue and red suit totally deserves it.
