S’pore Artist Who Sketches People on Public Transport Made Elderly Couple’s Day

A local artist has been gaining attention for sketching strangers on the train.

In particular, he sketched an elderly couple which, according to them, made their day.

The couple was taking the MRT when the artist happened to chance upon them and took the chance to create the cute sketch.

Here’s what happened.

Man Spots Elderly Couple on TikTok and Decides to Sketch Them

In an Instagram post made earlier this month, a local artist (@playingwithpencil on Instagram) shared a post of himself sketching an elderly couple on the MRT. The post has amassed more than 28,000 likes to date.

The artist’s profile states that his name is Jeff Lai Pin Nean, and he has both the Singapore and Malaysia flags indicated in his bio.

The video starts off by saying that the elderly man seemed to be immersed in his phone while his wife sat next to him, looking bored.

The artist decided he wanted to give her a surprise, so he whipped out his sketchbook to draw the couple. Using a pencil, of course (hence the Instagram handle, duh).

However, the couple soon alighted before the artist had the chance to pass them the drawing.

Man Gives Drawing to Elderly Couple Who Thanked Him

Not deterred by this poor timing, the artist filmed himself chasing after the elderly couple (who were walking hand in hand) to give them the drawing.

On the escalator, the artist “ambushes” the couple, telling them in Chinese that he sketched them and wanted to give them the finished work.

The couple’s initial confusion morphed into happiness as both the man and the woman looked visibly happy.

They thanked the artist for his present.

The couple’s verdict about the drawing? They thought that it looked like them.

How sweet.

The artist has been doing sketches for quite some time now.

His Instagram account is full of videos showing himself sketching an unaware passer-by and later giving them the drawing.

It seems that the artist just spontaneously sketches anyone who catches his eye and does this because there is “something special about giving physical sketches”.

Indeed, it seems that this simple gift can make one’s day (as it did for the elderly couple).

Would you like to be sketched by an artist someday?
