S’porean & M’sian Students Allegedly Attacked in Australia; Attackers Said ‘Coronavirus’ Repeatedly

The coronavirus have brought many people together; I for one am now closer to my inner self since the Circuit Breaker began.

But it’s been proven to divide people, too.

Over in Singapore, this fellow here who couldn’t buy his milk decided to spew racist remarks filled with colourful expletives:

And over in Australia, a Singaporean and a Malaysian student have been attacked simply for…existing.

S’porean & M’sian Students Allegedly Attacked in Australia; Attackers Said ‘Coronavirus’ Repeatedly

Over in Melbourne, Victoria, a state of emergency has been declared since 16 March 2020, and it has been planned to end on 11 May 2020. The region is almost like Singapore whereby people are being told to stay at home while only essential staff go to work.

Australia now has 6,565 cases, with Victoria having 1,319 cases as of time of writing.

Needless to say, people are getting restless and society has also come to an halt.

According to Mothership, this happened to a pair of female students from the University of Melbourne.

The two students, an 18-year-old Singaporean and a 20-year-old Malaysian, had allegedly gone out to get some groceries.

However, they spotted two Caucasian women verbally harassing other Asian passers-by.

It was reported that they made eye contact, which triggered the Caucasian women. They then turned to them, shouting, “Coronavirus!” repeatedly.

When the students tried to walk away, one of the Caucasian women threw a speaker at the Singaporean.

The Singaporean then punched back in self-defence, and this happened:

If you’ve no 20 seconds to spare, it’s basically a few women grabbing each other’s hair and sometimes punching each other.

A male passer-by then stopped the fight and that’s when the entire ordeal ended.

It’s unknown who was the person who had filmed the incident.

School Responded

The Vice-Chancellor of University of Melbourne Duncan Maskell has learned of the incident and responded, saying that he was “utterly appalled that two University of Melbourne students were targeted in a deplorable and unprovoked attack in the CBD” and the school would be “providing every assistance to the students.”

He added, “This is a disgusting and unprovoked attack on two of our female students. There is no place for violence in a modern, future-facing society like Australia. These senseless and vicious attacks on two young women must never be tolerated in our community.  The people who did this are a disgrace.

“Police are investigating the assault and I very strongly urge anyone with any information about the attackers to contact them. They must be caught and dealt with using the full force of the law.”

The students told Mothership that this wasn’t their first encounter with a blatant racist; once, a group of people had also shouted “coronavirus” at them.

Interestingly enough, before COVID-19 wreaked havoc in our society, they had not come across any “visible racism”.

The nasty bug doesn’t just infect people’s lungs; it also affects people’s brains.
