The Wuhan virus situation is showing no signs of cooling down. In fact, it just keeps getting worse.
The bad news? The novel coronavirus seems to be highly contagious. The good news? It isn’t quite as fatal or deadly as the Sars virus that plagued us back in 2003.
However, this doesn’t imply that the situation is not serious because it most definitely is.
The more contagious it is, the more people become infected with the virus and subsequently, more people end up succumbing to the illness.
Total Wuhan Virus Deaths Now at 813, Overtaking the Total SARS Deaths in 2003
The number of confirmed novel coronavirus outbreak has hit more than 37,000 people all over the world.
A whopping 2,600 new cases have been reported, according to the National Health Commission on Sunday.
The daily update revealed that there have been as many as 89 new deaths from the virus. The bulk of which (81 deaths) occurred in the Hubei province, the epicentre of the outbreak.
The other deaths were from other regions. This brings the total number of deaths in China to a high of 811.
When the disease first came about, everyone was afraid that it would be a Sars 2.0.
It suffices to say though that the situation is arguably worse given that the total global number of deaths has overtaken the number of deaths caused by the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) which shocked the world and killed as many as 774 individuals between 2002 and 2003.
WHO Says That Cases Reported Daily In China Is ‘Stabilising’
But enough of the bad news. The World Health Organization has announced that the number of cases being reported every day in China is ‘stabilising’.
However, it is still too early to see whether the virus has reached its height.
The victims of the virus include a 60-year-old US citizen who died in Wuhan on Thursday. Another is a Japanese man in his 60s who also passed away in Wuhan.
At the time of writing, there are two deaths that have occurred outside of China, one of which is a Chinese man in the Philippines and a 39-year-old man in Hong Kong.
It is clear that China is having trouble trying to stop the spread of the virus although Hubei and Wuhan are under lockdown.
This means that as many as 56 million people are being immobilised, while other cities are also taken steps to encourage people to stay indoors.
