For the last few weeks, our daily case count has fluctuated between 3,000 to 4,000.
While there were days where case numbers climbed steadily, they also dropped on other days and never breached the 4,000 mark. This gave us hope that cases would dwindle, but as we’ve learned throughout the pandemic, making predictions about COVID-19 rarely ends well.
Record 5,324 New COVID-19 Cases
5,324 new COVID-19 cases were reported yesterday (27 Oct), the first time our daily case count has surpassed the 5,000 mark.
The cases comprise 4,651 infections in the community, 661 in migrant worker dormitories, and 12 imported infections.
Among the local cases are 728 seniors above 60.
Sadly, more COVID-19 patients succumbed to the virus as well.
10 COVID-19 Fatalities
10 more COVID-19 have passed away due to complications from the virus, bringing our death toll to 349.
Aged between 54 and 96, nine of the cases had various underlying medical conditions, while one unvaccinated case had no known medical conditions.
IMH Cluster Swells to 153 Cases
The Ministry of Health (MOH) is monitoring seven large clusters at the moment, including the cluster at the Institute of Mental Health (IMH).
With nine more infections, the IMH cluster has swelled to 153 cases, making it the second-largest cluster on the list. 143 patients and ten staff have been infected there.
The larges cluster is still the one at the Bukit Batok Home for the Aged, with 157 infections. Of the 157 cases, 151 are residents and six are staff.
The five other clusters closely monitored by MOH are:
- Maple Bear Loyang – two new cases, 16 in total
- Banyan Home @ Pelangi Village – two new cases, 79 in total
- AWWA Community Home for Senior Citizens – two new cases, 80 in total
- MWS Christalite Methodist Home – two new cases, 126 in total
- PCF Sparkletots @ Zhenghua (632A Senja Road) – one new case, 26 in total
1,777 COVID-19 Cases in Hospital; 142 in ICU
At the moment, there are 1,777 COVID-19 cases warded in hospitals, most of whom are well and under observation.
308 serious cases require oxygen supplementation and 142 are in the intensive care unit, comprising 76 cases who are unstable and under close monitoring to prevent further deterioration, and 66 cases who are critically ill and intubated.
In addition, there are 20,895 cases undergoing home recovery, 4,589 in community care facilities and 849 are in COVID-19 treatment facilities.
Currently, 84% of our population has been fully vaccinated and 85% have received at least one dose. 14% have received their booster shots.
MOH Looking into “Unusual Surge” of Cases
The health ministry explained that case numbers were unusually high yesterday largely due to many COVID-positive cases being detected by the testing laboratories within a few hours in the afternoon.
“MOH is looking into this unusual surge in cases within a relatively short window, and closely monitoring the trends for the next few days,” it added.
