US Vice-President Kamala Harris Gets Orchid Hybrid Named After Her

It seems that the conventional tradition of naming orchids after foreign dignitaries continues.

In great vein too, we must mention.

Lest you’re unaware, Ms Kamala Harris is currently here in Singapore for a 3-day business visit. And despite being here for a relatively short time, she has already:

  • Visited our President
  • Held a joint press conference with PM Lee
  • Bumped fists with PM Lee

As the average Ah Pek would say: “Wa, not bad ah.”

You can view the press conference footage here.

Yet, what intrigues us isn’t just the press conference itself, which warranted a closer insight into the state of things between both nations. And though the fist bump was nothing short of legendary, it’s still not on our priority list as far as the word “intrigued” is concerned.

No, rather, it’s a rather stellar convention of our own.

As you may be aware of, Singapore makes it a point to name orchid varieties after various individuals. Apart from celebrities, dignitaries have also received the honour, with the likes of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge themselves presented with an orchid of their own.

Called the Vanda William Catherine, the orchid was named after them back in 2012.

And so, it’s not exactly surprising to see that Ms Kamala Harris has had her own orchid namesake on this very special day.

And how pleasing to see that the orchid’s named the Papilionanda Kamala Harris.

So apparently, a ceremony was held in celebration of Ms Kamala Harris’ first official visit to Singapore.

It reportedly took place in the morning today (23 August 2021).

While she was there, she also received an orchid named in her honour.

Apparently, the Papilionanda Kamala Harris is an orchid hybrid.

Previous Recipients

Back in 2013, Joe Biden and his wife Jill had an orchid named after them when they visited Singapore for a two-day period.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and his wife, Yoo Soon-taek, also received the honour at the National Orchid Garden.

Apart from foreign dignitaries, the likes of Zhou Xun, Jackie Chan, Bae Yong Jun and Shah Rukh Khan have all had orchids named after them too.

And for fans of fashion designer Michael Kors, you may be delighted to know that he also has an orchid namesake.
