A few days ago, a woman in Hougang took a lift up to her flat.
Normally, this wouldn’t make front-page news, as it happens every second of every day. But on that day, the woman had refused to share the lift with a delivery rider.
Unfortunately for her, her actions were caught on camera.
Since then, netizens have been debated whether the Lift Loner was being rude and disrespectful, or simply being cautious.
After all, safe distancing rules are in place across the country for a reason, right?
Well, more details have since emerged about the middle-aged woman that might make her explanation a little less convincing.
Woman Who Refused to Share Lift in Hougang Allegedly Cooked Outside Her Neighbour’s Window on 2 Occasions
Imagine this: You wake up in the morning to the beautiful smell of stir-fried meat and vegetables.
You head to the kitchen but find it emptier than the KTV lounges. You then realise that the smell is coming from inside your room.
Plot twist: You discover that a strange woman is cooking outside your window.
Sounds crazy, right? Well, that’s allegedly what happened to one neighbour of the Lift Loner.
Speaking to Lianhe Wanbao, a 40-year-old resident named Kai Wen said the woman had cooked stir-fried meat and vegetables outside his window along the corridor on two occasions.
What’s worse, the woman wasn’t wearing a mask on both occasions.
If true, this would contradict her supposed desire to safe distance during the pandemic, which is what she cited as a reason for not sharing the lift.
With neighbours passing by and her food in the open, she is certainly more exposed to the virus than if she were to stay indoors.
Husband: My Wife is Being “Creative”
One could use many words to describe the actions of this woman, but “creative” is the one her husband decided to go with.
While the woman declined to speak to the Chinese daily, her husband was interviewed and used the opportunity to defend his wife.
He said he didn’t see anything wrong with exercising caution by maintaining a safe distance during the pandemic.
He explained that before the lift incident with the rider, the woman had let two other residents use the lift before her.
As for cooking outside her house along the corridor, the husband said it was “creative”, and that only those who don’t know how to appreciate such creativity would view it in a negative light.

A Recap
The lift incident began with a rider needing to take an order up to a customer at an HDB block in Hougang.
However, when the lift doors opened, a woman cut in front of him saying “excuse me”, before entering the lift. She then held her hand out to stop the rider from entering, and says “You wait for next one.”
When asked why, the woman said it’s because we’re going through a “pandemic”.
Even though the rider explained that he needed to make his delivery urgently, the woman refused to let him through.
“You’re horrible, you know?”, the rider said to the woman.
