24 COVID-19 Cases Today (22 April); 1 is a Dorm Case & 1 is a Community Case

Lest you’ve forgotten, here’s something to remind you of the pains from the Circuit Breaker: exactly one year ago, on 22 April 2020, bubble tea shops were forced to close.

And today, there’s bad news, too.

As of 12pm today (22 Apr), the Ministry of Health (MOH) has preliminarily confirmed 24 new cases of COVID-19 infection.

22 of them are imported cases, 1 is a dorm case and 1 is a community case.

This brings the total number of cases in Singapore to 60,904.

Based on yesterday’s figures, the number of new cases in the community has increased from 2 cases in the week before to 9 cases in the past week. The number of unlinked cases in the community has also increased from 1 case in the week before to 5 cases in the past week.

17 Possible Re-infections

By now, you should be curious: eh, wasn’t it reported this morning that there were 11 new cases in a dormitory? Why is there only one reported today? And why is it 17 instead of 11?

This is actually still under investigation. According to MOH, the Ministry of Manpower  and MOH have commenced a special testing operation to test residents of Westlite Woodlands Dormitory (2 Woodlands Sector 2) for COVID-19.

So far, 17 recovered workers were found to be positive for COVID-19. These cases were immediately isolated and conveyed to the National Centre for Infectious Diseases.

MOH, together with an expert panel which comprises infectious diseases and microbiology experts, is investigating if they are re-infection cases.

274 Active Cases

There are currently 70 confirmed cases who are still in hospital. Of these, most are stable or improving, and 1 is in critical condition in the intensive care unit.

204 are isolated and cared for at community facilities. These are those who have mild symptoms, or are clinically well but still test positive for COVID-19.

30 have passed away from complications due to COVID-19 infection.
