When you get into an accident, the first thing you’d do is ensure that the other party is fine before letting every vulgarity known to humankind escape your mouth.
You’d then either come to an agreement on how to settle the matter, or, if the accident is serious enough, make a motor insurance claim so they can take care of some of the expenses involved.
But what happens if you were driving without a licence at the time of the accident? Well, you shouldn’t have been driving at all, but the right thing to do would be to report the matter at the nearest police station.
This man, however, did something a little different.
Three Men Accused of Making Fraudulent Motor Insurance Claims
The man, a 31-year-old, was allegedly the driver of a car that got involved in an accident that took place along Esplanade Drive last year.
The accident, which occurred in March, allegedly involved two vehicles at the junction with Collyer Quay and Fullerton Road.
It was later discovered that the 31-year-old didn’t have a valid driving licence at the time. Instead of reporting the accident, the man allegedly asked a 26-year-old man to falsely report himself as the driver.
Mistake number 1.
This 26-year-old man wasn’t exactly a law-abiding citizen himself, as he then recruited a 25-year-old man to be his purported passenger so they could file false injury claims.
Mistake number 2.
As anyone over the age of three knows, filing false injury claims is against the law and can land you in a whole heap of trouble.
It’s unknown how the three men were caught, but their offences eventually came to light.
Claims Amounted to $74,000; Three Men to be Charged
Investigations later revealed that the claims had amounted to around $74,000. All three men were nabbed for their part in the scheme.
The 25-year-old faces two counts of engaging in a conspiracy to cheat, while the 26-year-old faces three counts of the same offence. The 26-year-old is also accused of breaching COVID-19 regulations on social gatherings.
The 31-year-old driver faces two counts of driving without a valid driving licence, two counts of taking a vehicle without the owner’s consent, and two counts of driving without insurance coverage, among other charges.
Those who drive without a license can be jailed for up to three years, while those who drive without insurance coverage can be imprisoned for up to three months.
