Lest you’re not aware, here’s how the arrangement in SAF works now: trainees are split into groups, and no matter what, they can’t interact with trainees from other groups.
And when one person in a group is infected with COVID-19, the group will be isolated but the other groups will resume normal training.
At least that’s what happens in ICT lah.
While other groups would continue as per usual, training for the group with an infected case would be disrupted quite badly.
Apparently, one group in Pulau Tekong, most probably in BMT, got isolated because of a prank.
Training in Tekong Disrupted As Teen Posted Fake IG Story of Him in ICU Due to COVID-19
A 19-year-old teenager, Siew Hanlong, decided that it would be fun to play a prank at 1am, when everyone is sleeping.
Except that people might not be sleeping because it’s a Sunday morning.
On 23 May 2021, he posted an Instagram Story of a positive PCR test with the caption, “Guys… I got the new covid variant bye im die.”
And in the next story, he posted an image of himself on a hospital bed with the caption, “in ICU right now farewell guys.”
He has found the PCR test image online, and the image of him on a hospital bed was from his previous admission to hospital for an unrelated incident.
Somehow, he realised that no one was laughing and deleted the Stories 15 minutes later.
But like what Sylvia or Ryan would say, “There’s always receipts.”
Apparently, his friends started to talk about Siew’s post on a WhatsApp group, and one of them is serving NS in Pulua Tekong.
As he has met up with Siew earlier, he tried to contact Siew to confirm the posts.
Then Siew told him it’s all a prank and they live happily ever after?
No: Siew didn’t respond.
And so, the friend did what any responsible person would do: he reported to his army superiors that he was a close contact of a COVID-19 positive case, and was sent home to isolate after taking a swab test.
When he reached home at around 11:15am, Siew finally responded, saying that it was a joke.
By then, shit has hit the fan: the bunk had been disinfected and arrangements to isolate Siew’s friend’s close contacts were made. Training schedule was disrupted and I’m pretty sure a few Enciks were screaming.
Today (2 November 2021), Siew pleaded guilty to two counts of communicating a false message under the Miscellaneous Offences (Public Order and Nuisance) Act. He will be sentenced on 14 December.
For communicating a false message, he could be fined up to $10,000 and jailed for up to three years.
