Former Local News Anchor Jailed a Week For Riding a Motorcycle While Intoxicated

While some of us might recognise Oh Chin Wee as a familiar face on our television screens and a familiar voice through our radios, this probably isn’t how most of us envisioned seeing the former Mediacorp DJ and news anchor again.

Just yesterday (13 January), Oh pleaded guilty to two charges under the Road Traffic Act after he crashed his motorcycle into a car that was stationary due to the traffic light being red at that time.

Oh, 52, was sentenced to a week in jail, a fine of $7,000 and was disqualified from driving all types of vehicles for three years.

According to Lianhe Zaobao, Oh, a Singapore Permanent Resident from Malaysia, chose to serve his sentence immediately after pleading guilty. Hence, he should be able to be released from jail before the Chinese New Year holidays, which begin on 23 January.

Here’s what happened.

What Happened

Based on court documents, Oh was riding a motorcycle along Hill Street on 13 May 2022 at around 12.45 am.

Oh, who was travelling towards Victoria Street, ended up colliding with a car that had stopped at a traffic light in front of him.

Although Oh tried to swerve his motorcycle to the right, he was ultimately unable to avoid the car and ended up crashing into the right side of the car.

After the incident, a breathalyser test showed that he had 76mg of alcohol in 100ml of breath, over the legal limit of 35mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood.
