For the last year and a half or so, our main health concern has been contracting COVID-19.
While younger adults with underlying conditions can also suffer severe illness, health experts have repeatedly said that the elderly are particularly vulnerable to the virus.
As a result, many of us have taken countless precautionary measures to avoid contracting and spreading the virus to our loved ones.
But, sadly, there are other maladies out there that can lead to one’s passing, and they often come too soon.
Senior Minister Teo Chee Hean’s Wife Passed Away on 31 Oct at Age 67
Ms Chew Poh Yim, the wife of Senior Minister Teo Chee Hean, died on Sunday (31 Oct) at the age of 67.
It’s unclear what caused her death, but she is said to have passed away peacefully.
Ms Chew was general manager of NTUC FairPrice Foundation and had over 25 years of experience in management, marketing, and branding in the consumer and retail market.
The 67-year-old graduated from the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology.
Founded Organisation For Stroke Survivors
In 2015, Ms Chew founded Stroke Support Station, a charitable organisation that helps stroke survivors and caregivers.
Ms Chew understood the heavy responsibility that caregivers have on their shoulders, and how this can often affect familial relationships.
This, along with the additional support needed to reintegrate stroke survivors into society, was why Ms Chew founded the organisation.
Programmes carried out by the Stroke Support Station are supported by medical professionals and therapists from acute and community hospitals in Singapore.
But that wasn’t the only community program that the 67-year-old was a part of. She also collaborated with institutions such as the National University Health System and People’s Association.
In addition, she was on the board of trustees of SingHealth Foundation and a former president of Girl Guides Singapore.
Leaves Behind Two Children and Her Husband
Ms Chew leaves behind a son and a daughter, as well as a grandchild and her husband, Mr Teo.
Speaking to The Straits Times, Marine Parade GRC MP Seah Kian Peng described Ms Chew as a “gracious, thoughtful, and caring” person, who had a positive outlook.
Ms Chew’s family held a private funeral yesterday (2 Nov). While the family requested no wreaths, all donations received will go to the Stroke Support Station, NUS Mind-Science Centre, Girl Guides Singapore, the NCCS Cancer Fund, and Assisi Hospice
